A Climbing Gym Just Closed the Last Gap in Meriam Park's Daily Loop

A Climbing Gym Just Closed the Last Gap in Meriam Park's Daily Loop

For the first several years of Meriam Park's build-out, you could eat well, drink well, and catch a Friday night show at The Barn without leaving the neighborhood. What you couldn't do was work out. If you wanted a weight room, a yoga class, or anywhere to climb something taller than a stepladder, you got in the car. That changed this past August, when The Stack Climbing + Fitness opened its doors in the Tank District.

This matters more than a single new business announcement usually would, because of what it replaces. Meriam Park's retail list had grown into a genuinely good food court: Burban Kitchen for dinner, Daycamp Coffee for mornings, Live Life Juice Co. for the health-conscious, Savor Ice Cream for the end of the night, Farmers Brewing Co.'s taproom for everything in between. What it never had was a gym. The Stack fills that specific hole, and it does it at a scale that makes the old gap look bigger in hindsight.

The Tank District Was a Food Court Without a Gym

The Stack is 17,000 square feet, built in the heart of the district that already anchors Meriam Park's evening life. It's the project of professional climber Carlo Traversi, who also owns The Boulder Field in Sacramento, and it was designed as a serious climbing facility rather than a add-on amenity. Construction crews raised the building's steel frame, 49 feet tall, in the fall of 2025, and the roped climbing terrain inside now reaches up 45 feet, built by the same team.

That's not a small gym with a climbing wall bolted to one corner. It's a facility built around climbing, with fitness attached, which is a different proposition for a neighborhood that previously had none of either.

Here's what's inside, based on the gym's own specifications:

  • 8,000 square feet of roped climbing terrain up to 45 feet tall, designed by Traversi and built by Walltopia
  • 4,000 square feet of bouldering terrain, also Walltopia-built
  • A 12-by-12-foot angle-adjustable LED Tension Board for training climbers
  • Dedicated cardio and weight areas
  • A kids' climbing wall and party room
  • Flooring engineered specifically for climbing gyms by Flashed Climbing

For a resident who's been driving across Chico for a gym membership, that's the entire workout routine now sitting a five-minute walk from the coffee shop.

The Barn Isn't Slowing Down Either

The addition of a gym would be a big deal on its own in most neighborhoods. In Meriam Park, it's arriving on top of a fall events calendar at The Barn that was already full before The Stack broke ground.

Oktoberfest 2026 runs Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3, a 21-and-over event from 5 to 9 p.m. with the Alpenband playing traditional oompah music, a beer stein holding contest, a costume contest, and lawn games. CSU Dining Services is handling food, with bratwurst and sauerkraut on the menu, and the drink list includes Sierra Nevada, Farmers Brewing, and Ramble West alongside ciders, wine, and non-alcoholic options.

The calendar doesn't stop there. A second annual Funtober Fest brings face painting, balloon art, and crafts for families later in the season, priced at $10 for adults with kids admitted free. Weekly trivia nights run free with doors at 5:30 and questions starting at 6, and a recurring dog social gives leashed dogs and their owners a couple of hours at The Barn most months. Earlier this year, a Touch a Truck event drew families for a sensory-friendly hour before the general crowd arrived, letting kids get close to vehicles most only see from a car seat window.

None of this required The Stack to exist. But a neighborhood that already had a packed evening calendar and just added a serious daytime fitness option is a different neighborhood than one that had only the evening half.

Before and After, In Plain Terms

The easiest way to see what actually changed is to compare what a resident could do inside Meriam Park before this August against what's possible now.

What you wanted Before August 2026 Now
A weight room or cardio machines Drive to a gym elsewhere in Chico Walk to The Stack
A climbing wall Not available in Chico at this scale 45-foot roped routes, 4,000 sq ft of bouldering
Yoga or a fitness class Off-site On-site at The Stack
Evening entertainment The Barn's live music and food trucks Same, plus a fuller fall calendar
Weekend produce shopping Sunday farmers market at the Farmer's Brewing lot Same, still running

The right column didn't get longer because Meriam Park added another restaurant. It got longer because it added the one category that was conspicuously missing.

The Loop That Finally Closes

Meriam Park was designed from the start as a 220-acre master-planned community meant to blend living, working, and socializing into something you didn't need a car to navigate. The neighborhood's "Green River" of open space ties it into the regional trail network and Bidwell Park, so the outdoor half of that promise has been in place for a while. The indoor half was the piece still missing.

Consider what's now possible within Meriam Park's footprint that wasn't six months ago. A new roughly 4,000-square-foot Class A office suite delivered this summer just steps from the new Enloe Cancer Center, which opened its doors this August. Someone working out of that office can walk to The Stack for a midday class, grab coffee at Daycamp, eat dinner at Burban Kitchen, and end the night at a free Barn show, all without moving a car. That's the loop the master plan was written around, and it wasn't fully operational until a climbing gym filled in the fitness piece. If you want the fuller picture of how the medical corridor and the Tank District's evening scene fit together, we covered that shift in an earlier look at how Meriam Park runs on two overlapping schedules.

Sundays Still Belong to the Farmers Market

Fitness and events aside, the neighborhood's slower rhythm hasn't gone anywhere. The Chico Certified Farmers Market continues to set up Sunday mornings in the Farmer's Brewing Co. parking lot, with produce, honey, pastries, and flowers from local growers. The market accepts EBT and typically runs a Market Match program that doubles the spending power of a shopper's first ten dollars, a detail that matters if you're bringing a family and want the visit to stretch further. It's the kind of quiet, recurring fixture that doesn't make headlines the way a new gym does, but it's the reason a Sunday morning here still feels unhurried even as the rest of the calendar fills in.

What This Adds Up To

None of this is a reason to move to Meriam Park. It's a reason, if you already live here, to notice that the neighborhood just got measurably more useful without you doing anything. The Tank District spent its first few years building a reputation as a place to eat and drink well. This fall, it became a place to also train for something, whether that's a first attempt at a roped route or just a Tuesday workout that doesn't require getting on Highway 99.

If you're curious what else has changed in the neighborhood recently, or want a fuller picture of what's for sale here, the Meriam Park neighborhood page stays current with listings and local notes.
